North Macedonia: New NGO Law to Strengthen the Civil Society Sector

North Macedonia is advancing a new legal framework for associations and foundations aimed at aligning the sector with EU and Council of Europe standards. The proposed law seeks to strengthen the civil society framework through clearer rules on public support, CSO participation in decision-making, non-profit principles, transparency, and institutional cooperation with public authorities. It also aims to modernize state financial support, establish a legal basis for co-financing EU and international projects, and formally regulate the Council for Cooperation between the Government and Civil Society. By refining the principles of non-profitability and public interest while promoting financial sustainability and transparency, the law is a significant step toward a more resilient and active enabling environment for civil society in the country.  Read more here.
