BIRN Albania and SCiDEV have released a report assessing media freedom, pluralism, and journalist safety in Albania during 2025. The report examines legal reforms, institutional changes, and working conditions in the context of Albania’s EU accession process. While some procedural steps were taken to strengthen safeguards, structural challenges persist. Journalists continue to face pressure, intimidation, and restricted access to information, with many reporting fear of political interference. The report highlights difficulties during the 2025 parliamentary elections and ongoing challenges for women journalists, including gender-based harassment. It also notes steps toward transparency in media ownership and alignment with EU standards but calls for stronger implementation and institutional accountability to ensure a more independent and safe media environment.
