Serbia: Dismissal of N1 News Director Raises Concerns Over Independent Media

The European Federation of Journalists condemned the dismissal of N1 News Director Igor Božić, warning it raises serious concerns about the future of independent journalism in Serbia. Božić, currently unassigned pending a final decision, is supported by N1 staff and media organisations gathering in solidarity. His removal follows the restructuring of independent newsrooms under the Adria News Network and comes after earlier concerns over the dismissal of United Media Group CEO, reportedly linked to efforts to weaken N1’s independence. The EFJ highlighted revelations involving discussions between telecom and media executives suggesting political influence. The European Commission is also following the developments, reiterating that media freedom and editorial independence are essential for Serbia’s EU path, while journalists and citizens gathered in protest and concerns persist over political influence on independent media.
