Local initiatives in Serbia, highlighted through the ACT – for a Stronger Civil Society programme, show how CSOs drive accountability by identifying concrete community issues and proposing policy solutions. Examples include initiatives on improving air quality, strengthening child protection in media reporting, addressing gaps in social protection affecting women, and advocating for better water infrastructure and citizen participation in budgeting. However, these efforts often remain limited in reach due to declining local media capacity and lack of visibility. With fewer resources and outlets, important local stories struggle to reach national audiences, despite their broader relevance. Strengthening cooperation between CSOs and local media is therefore key to amplifying these issues, enabling wider public debate, and ensuring that citizen-driven solutions inform policy decisions, reinforcing transparency, participation, and CSO accountability.
