The Platform of CSOs for the Fight Against Corruption in North Macedonia called the Parliament of North Macedonia to urgently appoint a director and deputy director for the Agency for the Protection of the Right to Free Access to Public Information. The agency, which plays a key role in safeguarding citizens’ constitutionally guaranteed right to access information held by public institutions and ensuring government transparency at all levels, has been non-functional for a month following the expiration of the previous leadership’s mandate and the Parliament’s failure to appoint replacements. Access to public information is a fundamental human right enshrined in both international and European conventions, as well as in North Macedonia’s Constitution. It allows citizens to stay informed about their rights and obligations, access public services, participate in decision-making processes, and hold authorities accountable. It also serves as a critical tool for civil society, media, and investigative journalists to combat corruption and expose misuse of public funds and institutional irregularities. Read more here.
