New technologies are crucial to the right to peaceful assemblies. This trend has been further accelerated, with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. ICT and AI technologies provide many possibilities to facilitate protests and have a downside effect by allowing States and private actors to restrict the right of peaceful assemblies. The briefing is a summary of the Thematic Report (A/HRC/44/24) of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the impact of new technologies on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of assemblies, including peaceful protests. The Report has been prepared by following a request of the Human Rights Council Resolution 38/11. Read more here.
