On 24 October 2016, the CIVICUS Monitor went live. Two years on, there are ratings for 196 countries, over 1,500 individual updates on civic space have been published and 365,652 views by 73,944 people have been attracted! BCSDN has been part of the Monitor since its beginning, providing updates on civic space in the Western Balkan countries. Each day, we learn of new ways the Monitor is being used by others to ensure the issue of civic space is elevated in importance, that its connections to all other aspects of democracy and development are recognised and that the global trend of closing civic space is finally being given the attention it deserves. We also see how the Monitor is contributing to an increasing focus on civic space, bringing the conversation back to the importance of protecting civil society itself as a means of guarding against the dangers of populism and authoritarianism. Visit the CIVICUS Monitor platform here.
