The European Commission’s has just published its new strategy for the Western Balkans titled “A credible enlargement perspective for and enhanced EU engagement with the Western Balkans”. The strategy confirms the prospect for EU membership of all Western Balkan countries outlining that the two countries that have started negotiations, Serbia and Montenegro, might be ready to join the EU by 2025. Nonetheless, the strategy also sends a clear message to politicians in all six countries that more serious efforts and reforms are required for establishing rule of law, fighting corruption and organized crime, settling bilateral disputes and undertaking a number of other democratic changes. The full strategy is available here.
