Today, on 13th March, BCSDN gave its support to a group of 36 CSOs letter-reaction to the changes in the proposed-draft Government Strategy for Cooperation with Civil Society 2012-2017. The Strategy was being prepared with wide inclusion and in broad consultation with civil society since December 2011. However, The latest draft received by CSOs on 27th February on the public discussion held in the National Council of the European Integration, softens the main measures civil society has been advocating for, i.e. obligatory act on transparent state funding, establishment of national fund of institutional support and co-financing of EU projects by CSOs, establishment of Council for civil society development and change and greater autonomy of the Office for Coop with CSOs. Additionally, the letter asks for structured and obligatory consultation mechanisms to be set up and for legislative framework to be improved guaranteeing autonomy and independence of the sector. If the Government recognized the concerns of civil society, this could possibly lead to considerable improvement in the dialogue and position of CSOs in society and their functioning, so this Strategy is an important stepping stone in the right direction. The Letter has been addressed to the General Secretariat of the Government and the National Council for European Integration as well as shared with the Delegation of the EU. The latest draft strategy can be found here (in Macedonian only). The Letter-Reaction is available here.
